The Big Test

An exciting or perhaps stressful day today as we have the house tested for air tightness, though not essential, we wanted to be sure that all of the extra work preparing the building has paid off.

There is quite a bit involved in performing an air tightness test, predominantly setting up the blower door equipment.

But why bother I hear you thinking to yourselves. It all comes back to air quality and the benefits of living in a  healthy home, free of mould, dust, allergens, but for us the greatest incentive is to maintain a comfortable even temperature year round with minimal need for additional heating or cooling.

With a target of 0.6 air changed per hour, (the Passive House standard) the door was set up. Many calculations of size and volume were input into the computer, and we’re ready to go. The house was gently de pressurised then slowly pressurised and after a very tense wait were delighted with the result. Not only did we reach the target, we achieved 0.23.
