Thermal Bridging

Thermal bridging is another major consideration in a Passive House and care is taken to ensure that radiant summer heat and conductive winter cold does not impact on the internal comfort of the building.

Great care is taken when installing insulation to the building but what about the timer frame, metal beams and window frames and glass and even the concrete slab. These are all thermal bridges allowing the outside temperature to travel into the building and the inside temperature to escape out, the most obvious example of this is metal, on a cold day, if you touch the metal frame of an aluminium window it will be cold therefore bringing the outside temperature into the building, making it uncomfortable to sit near the window. Attention to detail is required to ensure that the correct products are used and thermal breaks are included.
